Why It’s Important To Memorize Surahs

Offering the five daily prayers is a matter of enormous importance for Muslims. Allah designated this as the second pillar of Islam. Meanwhile, the Prophet (PBUH) stated that prayer is the difference between faith and disbelief. The five daily prayers are mandatory for all Muslims and deliberately neglecting them or not offering them is a major sin.

For a Muslim to be able to offer the five daily prayers, he must be able to recite Arabic. Reading it as well will make things easier for him, but it’s possible to memorize surahs by hearing others instead of reading. Regardless, recitation in Arabic is an integral part of the prayer that we can’t neglect.

The most important surah that all Muslims should memorize is Surah al-Fatiha. This is the first surah in the Quran, and it’s also a dua for Allah to guide us to the straight path. Consisting of only seven short verses, it’s concise and easy to memorize. Without this surah, our prayer is invalid. Other surahs we should memorize include Surah al-Falaq and Surah An-Nas for protection from evil. We should also memorize Ayat al-Kursi, a verse from Surah al-Baqarah. The Prophet (PBUH) prescribed reading it on many occasions, such as after prayers. Surah al-Ikhlaas is another short surah that is an important surah to memorize because it contains a brief overview of the Oneness of Allah.
